1951: Pre-Olympic Test at Montelibretti
The born of Cavalry School date from 15 November 1823 with the establishment of the Royal Military School of Equitation in Venaria Reale (Turin), on the orders of the King of Sardinia Carlo Felice to instruct young students of Cavalry, the officers of each army and the components of the Court. The choice of the location falls on the grand premises of the Venaria Reale Castle, known as the Versailles of Savoy, older than the French, born for the desire of the Duke of Savoy, Carlo Emanuele II, in the seventeenth century.
After the first war of independence and consequently cease the causes for which in 1848 had been provisionally dissolved the Royal Military School of Equitation, in 1849 is again formed in a new place, Pinerolo, under the name of Cavalry Military School.
In 1865 the Cavalry Military School leaves Pinerolo and goes to meet in Modena with the School of Infantry Force, which takes the name of the Military School of Infantry and Cavalry and has the task of training the lieutenants. It is in practice the Institute known as the Military Academy.
The school is called Cavalry School - without distinction between "normal" and "military" - and remains until 1910. The Institute, after a considerable development, need to acquire more spaces and give over to new infrastructure projects and begins to think on the possibility to transfer elsewhere. It is believed that a dedicated riding Military Institute is placed proximity French border, saw the entry of Italy in the Triple Alliance (with Austria and Prussia) . It is examined the transfer of the School, unleashing a passionate debate at the highest levels.
It’s thought that the areas around Pisa, Rome or Caserta are better referred to as locations for a Riding School, because they allow you to carry out exercises in the country throughout the year.
The choice falls on Tor di Quinto, in Rome. Thus begin negotiations for buying of land and infrastructure for the future detachment and in 1891 it comes a new place of the Cavalry School, dedicated precisely to the complementary courses of country riding. Tor di Quinto is therefore a "branch" of Pinerolo and equestrian training is so to be done in the Piedmont and in Rome, where the open spaces of the countryside allow to conduct wide-ranging activities.
Since 1891 the course is conducted on an annual basis and become obligatory for all Subordinates Officers in permanent service and overcome it constitutes title of honor and pride. The master's course, held in Pinerolo, is abolished and the courses started in the Piedmont town in October and ending in July and then moved to Tor di Quinto for another three months.
With Tor di Quinto and with the new riding track in Pinerolo, horse riding has become a gallop training and jump in open countryside, but still miss the harmony between horse and rider. In fact, the obstacles are essentially faced with an act of courage and not with technique.
It is then in a transition period where it dominates the uncertainty. The old school is setting and new one is borning.
The school, between the XIX and XX century, live a truly innovative moment. In this period that is realized the full application of the natural riding system designed by Captain Federigo Caprilli!
Capt. Caprilli, reflecting on existing methods, he realizes just how incomplete the efforts of his predecessors and with great insight, understands the need to distribute the weight of the rider in perfect accord with the balance and the horse's feelings. This does away with all the complicated system of bites and the overthrow of the riders. Is developing the method or "natural horsemanship" system, based on the balance natural horse-rider and changes the traditional style setting. The method determines immediately excellent results.
The interest in Italy for the new revolutionary method is huge and in short time the School become famous around the world as first gym’s riding.
The 1910 - 1943 can be called the golden age Italian military equitation, and Pinerolo is for excellence the city of Cavalry and consolidate the reputation as a prestigious center of equestrian activities.
By decree of 17 July 1910 the Institute was named School of Cavalry Application ( "Application" means that it is a school of military discipline in which you move from theory to practice). Its main task is to complete the preparation of young lieutenants of the Force from the Academy of Modena, as well as other factors used in arming horse.
This is also the period where the School trains soldiers to the battlefields of the Italian-turkish conflict fields.
In 1946 constitute in Pinerolo the Centre Military Preparation Races entrusted to Colonel Gerardo Conforti to give continuity to the brilliant Italian equestrian tradition. The national equestrian shooting after the war is the work of a group of military Knights respectable, as Ranieri Campello, Bettoni, Lequio ...
They also fit into the Italian Federation of Sports and bringing an exceptional horse racing experience and allow to Italy to reap success on success.
In 1949 the Centre moved from Pinerolo in Montelibretti and becoming National Military Equestrian Center. The Montemaggiore estate, with a central majestic Renaissance building that once belonged to the great families of the Colonna, the Barberini and Sciarra, was taken leased in 1911 by the Ministry of War and then definitely bought in 1917 for the deposit breeding horses in Lazio. In 1955 it turns into pre-Olympic Equestrian Centre Military (CePIM) direct dependence on the Army General Staff, which becomes the hub of the equestrian rebirth after the war.
In the new headquarters of Lazio, significant evidence of the link with the past is the bronze that within the "Nasello Italico" remember the Cap. Caprilli.
The Montemaggiore seal becomes hotbed of military knights who dominate the international scene: among which we remember the brothers Colonel Piero D'Inzeo and Raimondo D'Inzeo for their written indelible pages in the world equestrian history. This remained until 1969 when changed its name again, and take the origins. Reborn the Military Riding School.
The activities concerning the training and the races at horse shows and training of horses and riders. The results are brilliant and include titles at world and Olympic level.
The School is also prepared staff for departments on horseback, grooms called squads, from the Modena Military Academy and the School of Application of Turin. The Institute preserves and revives the equestrian tradition of the Force, keeping alive the competitive spirit and love for the horse.
Its location guarantees wide spaces needed for the development of every equestrian activities, in close coordination with the Military Centre of Grosseto Vet.
After the war the Cavalry don’t have a specific school for the operational needs of the Force, it uses Troops School Battleships (Caserta) and the Infantry School in Cesano (Roma). In 1984 became Cavalry and Infantry School and it was given the weapon of the Force.
In 1993, the weapon switch to the Military Riding School which, at the same time, change the name in Cavalry School.
At the end of the nineties, in the context of a further reorganization initiated by the Army, he need to have an institute dedicated to the study, the deepening and development of a specific training type "RSTA" (Reconnaissane, Sourveillance and Target Acquisition = Exploration, Surveillance and Acquisition targets), and so 31 October 1998, as part of the "Polo Cavalry and Armored Troops," the Command School moved to Lecce and in the estate of Montemaggiore constitutes a Training Grouping RSTA, where is maintained the military riding at a competitive level of excellence. In the many activities it doesn’t miss the constant support to local communities and in this respect runs must remember that the banner of the Grouping (formerly Flag Troops School Battleships) is decorated with a Bronze Medal for Army Value, for rescue operations to populations affected by the earthquake in Campania in 1980 and the Order of Military Merit of the Republic of Brazil.
During 2004 remember an ancient tradition reconstitutes the equestrian carousel in historical uniformly, introduced in November 2005 in the "Golden Gala" at Verona Horses Fair, is applauded enthusiastically during the different evenings from about 35,000 people. The result is likely to entice the Chief of Army Staff to propose it officially, under the name of "Carousel Horse of the Italian Army" in the spring, at the Tor di Quinto Military Hippodrome, in the presence of the highest offices the FA.
So here we arrived to our days: January 1, 2007, the Army Staff shall dissolve the Grouping and the same time constitutes the new Military Riding Centre.
